Beware of Sunset Waters- it is awful! Visited: November 2007
Posted by katherin
What a disappointment the hotel was to me. I travel a lot for dive trips to various Caribbean islands and Asia. The diving in Curacao was great, but the hotel at Sunset Waters was just gross.

There were stained towels, stained sheets and bedspread, and no phone in the rooms. It was a cinderblock one-story building far away from the dive shop (not pictured in marketing materials). Also, the room flooded when it rained, and the glass sliding doors didn't meet at the top so roaches and mosquitos got in at night.

There was no hot water my entire four-night stay, so I could never get clean. There was also no extra toilet paper, so when you ran out you were in trouble! There was no deadbolt lock or safe in the room, either.

Beach towels were available at the front desk, but it was inconvenient to the pool and beach.

I was not impressed with the general manager, Jim Hunter, whom bragged to me about being married to girl 20 years younger than him, and made disparaging comments about his former place of employment.

Also, the room was dirty, they served bad food (even the fish they served daily was frozen). Drinks were of low quality. Light beer was an extra dollar per drink. I can't believe they get away charging what they do for nightly rate.

Another girl in our group's toilet exploded, and they wanted to charge her $100 more per night to move.

As for amenities, the gym was a joke with a treadmill from 1970.

Stay away! I wish I had been warned!

Sunset Waters is a hidden treasure. Visited: January 2003

Sunset Waters was way beyond our expectations. It was in a secluded part of the island, a half hour from town. The shuttle ran several times per week to town, or you could hire Rudy to take you where you want to go. Car rentals were also available in town.

We had the all-inclusive package and never felt the need to go anywhere else. The resort had kayaks, miniature golf, tennis courts, volleyball, hiking trails and a beautiful beach. Sunset watching from the bar was our favorite evening activity.

Choo Choo will try to meet any requests for activities. The staff was friendly and very accommodating. Service was excellent in all areas. Food was excellent and there was plenty of it - lots of salads and fruits, and dinners were four-course meals.

We were in room 117, which was large and had a balcony overlooking the water, and also the nude beach. The resort was clean and in good condition. The rooms had ceiling fans and a/c, a phone and cable TV.

The manager, Jim Hunter, was the best we have ever met in 25 years of traveling. Jim made himself available to all the guests and did his best to meet any requests.

Sunset Waters is a hidden treasure. We will be going back.

Sunset Waters was a quiet honeymoon retreat! Visited: September 2002
Posted by zazie_h
Sunset Waters was the perfect getaway from the big hotels.

We wanted somewhere small and secluded for our honeymoon, and we found it! September was a quiet month and there were a couple of days we were the only people on the beach. There was a lot of coral, so water shoes are recommended.

We loved the friendly atmosphere and selfishly enjoyed how empty the resort was. If you are looking for nightlife or a lot of entertainment, this is not the place.

Jim, the general manager, was fantastic and made sure all our needs were met. Our room was decorated and had champagne on ice for our arrival. Jim worked with my husband to surprise me with a private dinner on the beach for the two of us. It was wonderful!

We will definitely be back!

Identity Crisis at Sunset Waters? Visited: July 2002

Sunset Waters was a mixed bag of mediocrity.

The rooms were ok. Be sure to get an ocean view. The property looked tired and in need of an overhaul. The resort did have people working on keeping the property clean and tidy.

The beach was very large and clean but without the benefit of palm trees or other vegetation that might make it attractive (there were several thatched overhead structures for shade). One needed water shoes due to the large quantity of coral at the water’s edge. On the plus side, the resort did have many items like kayaks, water bikes, and snorkel equipment that one could grab and use in the small lagoon the resort had built.

The food was generally bland. The menu changed each day for lunch and dinner. Breakfast was best. The resort offers both “all-inclusive” (skip this – the extra you pay is not worth it) and “a la carte” programs. The restaurant staff service needs a lot of work as it was constantly VERY slow or servers just plain forgot what you ordered.

The resort is located extremely far from the main town and airport, making it an all-day exercise to go anywhere. There is no nightlife at the resort, so one is essentially “stuck” there each evening. That may be ok some of the time…(note: there are a wide variety of restaurants/bars, etc, in Willemstad).

On the positive side, management really tried to make your stay there enjoyable. They happily arranged, at no cost to us, several excursions that were not on regularly scheduled trips. The general manager made it a point to “schmooze” a little bit with all the guests and insisted on letting him know if you needed anything.

If you are a scuba diver, the diving was great. Curacao has worked hard to protect its reefs and the effort shows. They were all in pristine condition with lots of fish. Sunset Waters is located within a short boat ride of many of the best dive sites on the island. Many of the sites can be accessed from the shore. The first rate dive shop located nearby (not part of the resort) is Easy Divers (talk to Anne-Marie).

Other things of interest are walking around in Willemstad (the main town), visiting the Curacao aquarium, and also visiting the ostrich farm (riding one is a real hoot!).

All in all, a visit to Curacao is recommended, especially if you are a diver.

Get off the beaten path and still have it all! Visited: June 2002

This all-inclusive resort is the perfect get-away for couples who just want to feel like they are on a deserted island without the hassle of foraging for your own food.

The resort was a distance away from everything, but the staff made it a prority to cater to your every need (they tailored a trip to town that fit our needs). We saw the manager, Jim, every day, and he always inquired as to our needs. I don't believe that many people are aware of this resort and also being the low season, we practically had the place to ourselves.

Our room was beautiful, with French doors that opened over a cliff overlooking the sea.

The beach area was a well-kept lagoon. The resort provided rafts so guests could relax and float around in the crystal blue waters. We just walked down to the beach and immediately the attendant provided us with floats. We were usually the only ones out there. Snorkeling gear, kayaks and big wheels were provided by the resort and ocean snorkeling was provided just off the property- within walking distance.

There was only one restaurant open, so the menu was more limited than some all-inclusives, and there were a few items on the menu where a nominal charge was added. We missed the lobster, thinking that it was probably a regular choice and when we inquired, they said that they would accommodate us the next night.

They were true to their word. The food was prepared very well and we really didn't miss those endless buffets that usually go along with all-inclusives. The view of the ocean while dining was breath-taking.

There was a small casino right on the premises if you had the itch to gamble, and some kind of subtle musical entertainment was provided each night, but that isn't what you'll remember about a stay at this resort. If you truly want to leave the rat race- this is it!

A tranquil, romantic and peaceful place to be. Visited: November 2001

We have traveled all over the Carribbean, and Sunset Waters was one of our best vacations.

We're divers and basically just eat and dive. The diving was the best we've ever done. The food was of excellent quality and very fresh. There was no night life, but they had a casino which was open every night.

The beach was beautiful and very calm, enclosed by a reef. They provided floats so you could just float around all day, or snorkel just outside the reef. The beach boys were friendly and helpful.

We are going back again this summer.

A wonderful, quiet, secluded getaway. Visited: September 2001

My wife and I stayed here for our honeymoon. It exceeded all expectations! The weather was perfect (90 degrees each day and sunny). For 1/2 of the week we were 2 of 5 total people there. It is away from the capital and the majority of the tourists.

The beach is perfect and the small lagoon is great for snorkeling. The workers were friendly, spoke great English and helped to make it a wonderful, memorable honeymoon. If you are looking for a wild nightlife, though, this is definitely not the place to stay.

We loved it and would recommend it highly!

Great scenery, people and lots of R&R Visited: May 2001

My boyfriend and I spend five wonderful days at Sunset Waters. Living in Northern New Jersey and working in New York City gets crazy at times; Sunset Waters served as a great escape. We never imagined a place could be so peaceful, romantic and scenic.

Wonderful (clean) secluded beach, hotel rooms, customer service and tropical birds galore. Two parrots even perched on a tree in front of our table while we were dining at the hotel. Suggestions: Get a room with an ocean view and ask for coconut cake with ice cream for dessert. This place is not for those looking for lots of noise and traffic.
